I joined the Department of Systems and
Information Engineering at the University of Virginia in the fall of
2005, upon receiving my PhD from the University of Iowa, Department of
Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.
Before returning to graduate school, I worked in industry
in software engineering at Motorola, NASA Ames Research Center, and
Rockwell-Collins. My work involved implementing low-level data transfer
and call
handover algorithms for GSM cellular networks, building an intelligent
robot user interface for the Antarctica, and designing software
components for a GPS (Global Positioning Satellite) navigation
simulator.
Research
Interests
My major research interests include human
factors/ergonomics, computational neuroscience, biomechanics, haptics,
control and human-computer interaction. My main research
goal is to clarify mechanisms underlying tactile sensation to help
determine fundamental human capabilities, similar to that achieved in
the fields of visual and auditory sensation. The application of his research seeks to
advance neural prosthetics/robotics, to aid people whose sense of touch
is deteriorating, and to improve human-robot interfaces, especially in
medicine.
