» Testimonials from Past Students

“I saw this as an opportunity to throw myself a curve ball...I gained confidence as well as knowledge. I think challenges in the future will appear much more manageable to me.”  - Alex Rixey (UVA '05-'06)

"I found the exchange program to be an incredible and worthwhile experience and I would do it again if I had the opportunity……Overall, the exchange program was an amazing experience and I enjoyed going into the field, returning with information and developing a tool to solve a problem.  The UVA Systems Engineering department prepared me for this academic experience and I utilized the skills that I have learned as an engineering student on this project.…In addition to academic experiences, I also learned an incredible amount about the Brazilian culture, how Latin Americans perceive the United States, met a lot of interesting people, and learned a lot about global politics.  The Brazilian culture is more intimate than the American culture.  When greeting and meeting people for the first time, kisses are often given and received between men and women.  People also share more and everything is more communal. It was definitely a blast"  – Craig Pratsch (UVA '05-'06)

"It was the best 6 months of my life, period.  In a short time, I came away completely fluent in the language and accepted into the culture, with a group of lifelong friends who I still count as some of my closest.  Now that I am out in the working world, there are few challenges that daunt me, because I already took on this wild adventure, and came out so much stronger for the experience."  – John Yandziak (UVA '05-'06)

"It was a great experience.  The people were beautiful and friendly.  I enjoyed learning Portuguese and interacting with the locals.  It was really great to learn about the Brazilian culture; the nightclubs, the history of the city (I lived in Rio) and to be able to travel in my free time.  Anyone who gets this opportunity should take it." - Patrick Giesecke (UVA '06-'07)
