World-Class Faculty

Any educational program depends critically on the quality of its teachers. That’s why only full-time faculty from the University of Virginia’s engineering and business schools teach courses in the Accelerated Master’s Degree Program. These faculty members are experts at clearly synthesizing complex information and engaging students in the classroom. They are all active researchers who consider this program, with its emphasis on industry and government professionals, an ideal forum to disseminate the latest findings in this fast developing field. Faculty scholars include:

Donald E. Brown

Chair of the Department of Systems and Information Engineering

Professor of Systems Engineering

Don Brown has worked as a consultant for numerous private and governmental organizations and as an investigator for over 50 research contracts with federal, state, and private organizations. He was president of the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society and a member of the U.S. Department of Defense Joint Directors of Laboratories' group on data fusion.

Robert L. Carraway

Associate Professor of Business Administration

Electives Coordinator, Darden School

In addition to teaching at Darden, Robert Carraway is a management consultant as well as a Visiting Lecturer at the Instituto para el Desarrollo de Empresarios en la Argentina (IDEA). He was co-author of Quantitative Business Analysis: Text and Cases, Irwin, 1997 (with Samuel Bodily, Sherwood Frey, and Phillip Pfeifer).

William T. Scherer

Associate Professor of Systems Engineering

Bill Scherer has served on the School of Engineering's faculty since 1986. He has authored and co-authored numerous publications on intelligent decision support systems, combinatorial optimization, and stochastic control. He is an associate editor for International Abstracts in Operations Research and reviewer for Operations Research, Annals of Operations Research, and IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics.

Yacov Y. Haimes

Lawrence Quarles Professor of Engineering and Applied Science

Director of the Center for Risk Management of Engineering Systems

Yacov Haimes is a former Congressional Science Fellow, has edited or co-edited 17 books, and is an associate editor of three archival journals: the IEEE Transactions of Systems, Man, and Cybernetics; Reliability Engineering and Systems Safety; and Risk Analysis. Previously, he chaired the systems engineering department of Case Western Reserve University and directed its Center for Large-scale Systems and Policy Analysis.

K. Preston White Jr.

Professor of Systems Engineering

Pres White has published over 80 scholarly articles and is the U.S. editor for International Abstracts in Operations Research and an associate editor for Automatica, the International Journal of Intelligent Automation, and the IEEE Transactions on Components, Packaging, and Manufacturing Technology. His industrial experience includes positions as faculty-in- residence in the Advanced Technologies Division of Newport News Shipbuilding and as distinguished visiting professor in the Modeling and Statistical Methods Division of Sematech.

Peter A. Beling

Associate Professor of Systems Engineering

Peter Beling has served on the faculty since 1993. Before joining the University faculty, he held positions at the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose, CA, where he designed efficient optimization algorithms for parallel computers, and the Center for Naval Analyses in Alexandria, VA, where he was involved in the design and implementation of transportation and logistic systems.

Stephen D. Patek

Assistant Professor of Systems Engineering

Steve Patek has served on the Systems Engineering faculty since January 1998. Before joining the University he worked as a research engineer at Alphatech, Inc., where he developed algorithms for solving large-scale dynamic optimization problems. He has also worked at the US Navy Coastal Systems Station and NASA Langley Research Center.
